Undulating rings...
« on: September 06, 2014, 11:28:54 am »
So, a few months back, my girlfriend bought a few osage staves because she wanted to learn to make a bow. She gifted a stave to me and I chased a ring on it last night. The back is pristine(took a long time with the valleys), but the rings are kind of erratic.

Will this affect anything or am I good to go?

Looks good to me. I have never seen a "Flat" back on Osage.

It will affect the tiller a little bit but if you concentrate on the limbs bending evenly and together there shouldn't be any problems.
Places like that is where a goose neck scraper come in handy.  ;)

You would be hard pressed to find any wood with a perfect  back surface, either flat or curved.

Pat, I bought a set of card scrapers a while back. They are like magic on a piece like this. I took my time, but that goose neck just glides through those dips, love it.

NO piece of wood has a perfectly flat back unless it's a board. You're completely fine it will not effect any thing !
I like osage
