First Deer with traditional bow. Oct. 2011

 I had been out hunting earlier in the day without any luck and I went inside for a break. I decided to head back out to give it one more try before I lost daylight. I was only out in the woods for 20 minutes when this big buck comes trotting down the hill right toward me. He passed behind a tree as I came to full draw. And then he paused quartering away about 15 yards from me. I took my shot and he fell about 50 yards away. I could see him fall from where I was standing. It is my first ever with a traditional bow!
      I was shooting my handmade 3-piece take-down recurve. It is 45 lbs. @28 in. I was shooting Gold Tip carbon arrows.
       This year I am shooting my Lofton long bow 65# @ 28" I am hoping to have some success.
        I know it wasn't with primitive gear, but I hoping to work my way up to that. I have some dogwood shafts and I knapped an obsidian point and hafted it on with some sinew and hide glue. So maybe soon I will get me a deer with that.

Oh yeah and his antlers had both been broken off. So I am not sure what kind of rack he had, but I am guessing he was around 150#.

You were vastly underestimating the effect mass has on gross score.  Judging by the bases, more like 170-175.   >:D

well, like I said it was a guess. Although I do have one more tenderloin steak left in my freezer. I was out hunting last night, but with no luck. Which might have been a good thing since we are packing up our house to move and processing and butchering a deer would have taken me well past midnight to accomplish. Even with my lovely wife's help.

Nice deer, nothing like you first trad/primitive kill.Was that this season ? Also what is the bow made of ?

This was last season. I am hoping to get one soon! I am not sure what kind of wood it is I am guessing it is walnut. Maybe I should bring it by Twin Oaks sometime. I'd love to see the place.
