Well it was fun while it lasted
« on: August 28, 2014, 05:44:28 pm »
Soooo I went to the range to shoot my bow for the third time (I've already shot 60ish arrows out of it) and it splintered while drawing it back... There's no way this is salvageable, right? I'm just really upset about this haha.

Nah, she's R.I.P.   Resting in Pieces.

Back to the drawing board.  On the bright side, you get to make more wood shavings!
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

Also, you get to apply what you learned on this one to the next.  (that kinda makes me feel better, so I thought it was worth a shot  :) )

Bummer dude.

Fortunately, bows DO grow on trees.  You just have to whittle them out a bit.

Study that break very well so when you choose your next board stave you'll know what not to get. Looks to me, from what I can see, that it lifted a splinter along a grain line on the tension side of the bow.
Sorry for your disappointment but if you're gonna build wood bows you have to expect breaks. I went for my first 15 years or more without breaking a bow. Some badly bent but no breaks. A few years back though every bow I touched broke and these were all tree stave selfbows.

Yep, been there, done that.

how clean is this splinter...just askin cause if its very clean ( no chunks of wood in it or a lot of debris)  you might be able to just fill that thing with super glue and then take some linen or serving string and wrap it tight....then soak the string or linen with super glue...i got a red oak mollie that lifted a big splinter and it was repaired this same way...it still shoots 2 yrs later...no loss in performance.   what have ya got to lose??

4dog, the splinter is about as clean as it gets! When I press it back down into the wood you can barely tell it's there... Wow this is really getting my hopes up haha does anyone else have any experience with doing something similar?? and 4dog would you recommend I back it after gluing it down and wrapping it? (what kind of glue should I use by the way??)?
