osage sapling bark on

This is a osage sapling bow that I made last January.  It is 66" n/n. 52#@28". With the bark on. After thousands of shot it has about a inch of set.

How did you preserve the bark from rotting?

[Renacs]

I sanded the bark down as much as could while still leaving some on and sealed it with true oil a few months after I split it. Then sat it with my other staves for a yr. And hoped for the best. It did warp some as it dried, but it worked out to be center shot. I Was going to heat it but I didn't want to push my luck with it.  I figure if the bark was going rot off, it would of done it by now.  ( hope).

 I love osage sapling bows. I've never left the bark on but have made 4 or so with good success. My most recent method was to saw the pole in half, lengthwise and bind the two halves back together with small wood spacers between them to allow good air circulation.

I'll work on resizing the pics, but it might be a bit. I'm getting ready to head up to michigan for a few days. Pretty pumped about it, I'm bringing my bow fishing  rig with me. I guess it's legal to arrow catfish there. Which isn't the case in Ohio. My time is limited but ill give it hell. Go Buckeyes!

That looks very nice and very primitive! I never would have guessed that would work. I always figured the bark would either pop off or break under tension, glad it worked out for ya:)
