Hide tanning solution

So I have a fox hide I wanna tan. I wanna keep the skull so I don't wanna mess it up getting the brains out.

My question is how good do the solutions work? And y'all recommend any? I wanna make a quiver outta this little fella.

Any other ideas are welcome as well. I know I can do other processes like bark and egg but never done any of em. Thabks

Bass Pro sells a kit that will do two deer hides. Pretty cheap.

I have tanned with a chemical solution called Trappers Tanning Formula. It's citrus based and the final product is nice But it does leave a "slimy" finish to hide. I have a deer skin I finished that needs to be pulled more and the soft feel that brain tanning gives is not there. I believe if you remove spine from skull that you should be able to remove brain and not damage skull, or if you have access to a slaughter shop that any brain can work. I'm not totally sure but from reading past PA magazines this to be true. Anyone else know?

You can easily remove the brain without damaging the skull.  Check out the pictures about halfway down this page.  I use a "brain blaster" to get the brains out of a deer skull.  It is just some small tubing hooked up to a water hose.  It flushes all the brains out in just a few seconds.

How do u collect them Clint? I saw your build along European mount. But doesn't that wash away some of the oils?

I carefully blasted some out into a bowl.  Most of it comes out in one big blob.  I poured the excess water off of it  before freezing.

Check out the meat department in ethnic food stores. Some carry one pound plastic tubs of pig brains.

I bought a bottle of Tannit for $20, I did 5 skrat hides and it took a bit over two cap full's. Its a hard tan, so you have to allow it to dry, then work it over if you want it softened.

I use pig brains, but you have to smoke braintan, or you have rawhide again! when it gets wet,

For like an hr or two right? It does something to make it not decompose anymore and there in turns to leather

Brain tan won't turn back into rawhide when it gets wet if you don't smoke it, it will just dry hard unless you pull and stretch on it as it drys again. if you smoke it it will dry soft after it's been wet without stretching. Pig brains will work fine. Never done brain tan with hair on so really can't say how to do it, I do it to make buck skin/hair off.
