Today's project - Elevated splitting stand
« on: July 30, 2014, 12:40:07 pm »
I've been wanting to make an elevated stand where I can split logs without bending down to ground level.  I mowed a spot for it and a fire pit in the field next to my garage.  Last night my Dad helped me cut and drag some telephone poles into the yard.  I'm going to take advantage of the slope of the ground.  I have the first hole dug down 24".  That should be plenty deep enough.  I only had to bust through 4" of rock to get there.  I'll post more pictures as I go along today.  If anyone has any ideas to improve it feel free to throw them out.  I'm still not sure how I'm going to mount the horizontal poles on top of the vertical posts.

At least I've never hit my head on the roof at Pappy's bow shop.  Looks like you've hit your head so many times you wore it smooth  ;D

Got the other hole dug and found more rock than I did on the first one.  I busted what I could and had to shift the hole over just a little bit.  I got both posts in the ground.  Next is packing the clay dirt back in around them.

I got both posts all tamped down and set.  I notched each post so the poles can set on them solid.  My Dad came home just in time for the heavy lifting.  We lifted the first pole into position.

We sunk the back ends down so they would be close to ground level.  Everything is in place.  I just need to get some long lag screws to anchor the poles to the posts.  I plan on putting a board between the two posts to keep everything secure.

I will be able to pull a log to the top and roll it down to the end.  I will be able to split them without bending over or lifting them.  This should really save my back.

Gotta see it work. My simple mind isn't wrapped around this.

I don't mean to be negative about this but what about all those people whose telephones you put out of service by cutting all those telephone poles?   :)

Gotta see it work. My simple mind isn't wrapped around this.

Pearly, I'll drag a big log to the uphill side with the utility truck and unhook it.  Then I'll roll it down the two poles to the end.  It will be just the right height to split without bending over and killing my back.  Basically its a way to get the log elevated without lifting it.  I have a tree or two picked out that need to be turned into bow staves.  I'll give it a good test run here soon.

Marc, those poles were ones they replaced on our property so nobody lost service  :)
