60# osage character bow. what should i name her?
« on: July 18, 2014, 04:54:49 pm »
this here is the bow that started my latest post about lunar growth rings in osage orange which seemed to spark some interest so id thought id finish up the bow and post it.

its was split from a tree of the shore of the east coast were i  have gotten all of my osage

its 60 #@28" with deer antler stringer knocks

shoots really quiet but because of the large hole and knot in the lower limb it nearly shakes my arm off when i shoot it so it wont see too much action time

help she needs a name !

Don't know about a name but the knot at the end shouldn't really add any hand shock that has been my experience anyways

the problem is the grain around the end was funny so i left alot of wood around the tips and just did a stiff tip tiller i don't see what else could cause as much hand shock as this bow has

first off V nice bow, but it looks to me like you could've just avoided the knot altogether, and gotten away with a skinnier tip. No one can tell from just pics though, good job with it altogether.

Hey yea thanks guys I put the know in there on purpose thing it would look cool cuz I don't have many character bows but I guess if I want it to shoot good I'll just have to take out the old post hole

:'(  :'( I'm gonna miss it but maybe it will allow me to put a hole in a big buck >:D

Nice bow man, looks like midlimb and out could bend a little more and is probably contributing to the handshock. Did it take much set out of the fades?

the trade bow I sent out had a almost identical limb and it is smooth, address the areas wizardgoat mentioned , I doubt you will lose much weight but it will make it shoot smoother
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

it only ended taking about one inch of set pretty much the mid limb of the bow, if you look at how the bow took set it looks like its bending too much in the mid limbs

most of the tillering problems i had were because the stave was not very straight and there was about 3" of re curve in just the handle area

Thanks for the advise guys ill work on it if i get the chance, i already have a bow for hunting season this year so it will just be a wall  hanger i guess  :D

Nice "lunar" work. I guess handshock is caused by the extra width at the hole of the upper limb. Midlimbs should bend a bit more.

+1, could take out the hole and sell it on E-bay  ::) or ship it to me, I could do with a hole that size, the Osage I'm working on has a pathetic little hole about 1/8"  :-[
