Elder Statesman!
« on: July 14, 2014, 05:30:50 am »
Be gentle with me guys, this is my first try at a Deflexed Recurve RD, DR whatever... It's only the second time I've used Elder (It's Monkey bow's big brother ;D ).
I didn't really have any idea what I was doing so it was all done on the fly by the seat of my pants, aiming for something round 60 -70# at 26" ish  ;)
The digital scale read 69# at 26"
She's 66" ntn in a straight line (and about 25,000 miles if you measure the long way round the the back or the world  ;) )
I think I've got too much bend near the grip and the left (lower limb is prob' a tad straight compared with the upper).
Critique will be appreciated as it's my first.
I was after a fast bow to beat my speed record... not tried it get as I haven't made the string. She's heavy to draw as 70# at 26" makes my poor ageing shoulders think "Hey Del you ain't getting this baby back to 28" !
Tips could prob loose some weight. Tip overlays are Laburnum. The belly side of the grip needs building up with cork to be comfortable. I filled the pith groove in the grip with some Yew offcuts... more pics if you ask nicely  ::)
You can see see my new Ali' toroidal string adjuster too  :)

Take it for what it's worth as I've never even attempted a r/d, but it looks good to me.
If you never have time to do it right, you'll always have time to do it over.

Looks ok for the first one.
Could bend a little more in the outer limbs and a little less near the handle as you said.
Maybe a little heattreat at the fade outs and some scraping at the outer limbs and you can pull her to 28"

She's had the heat treatment! Several times... and some steaming to get the deflex :)
Mind I can ease her off a tad as I could afford to loose say 5#

No expert for sure ,but looks good to me,maybe a bit much at the handle /fad area but the rest looks fine. All the reflex and tip area has flattened out nice to my eyes. :)

I definatley wouldn't try to get the outer limbs bending any more. Over all if say you did great for your first go at it! I bet it's SMOOTH!

Dunno... I haven't pulled it right back yet ;).
Actually its a tad scarey, I can feel a hint of flex in the grip.... although she's been back a bit past 26" on the tiller.
Just finished the string... I'll give it a go once I've had a bite to eat.

The left limb does appear to be slightly stiffer . . . but it is looking pretty darned good.  Looking forward to viewing the final product!!

It's a damned good thing I didn't let a certain Cat bow look at the computer this morning ::) Nicely done though. Don't know squat about those bows but do know about trying to make the profiles match. Looks to me that if you insist on the very last little symmetry thing maybe a couple scrapes left mid-limb to flatten the fade a smidge.

No matter what, I like my English long bow best 8)

Pretty cool bow  :)
I'd say the right limb is bending a little too much near the fades. It's the mid limb that needs a little tweaking to my eyes.

About 2" at widest, here's a pic of me inspecting the bottom nock.

Like a hint more bend in mid limb?
