First guy to ever make a bow
« on: June 17, 2014, 10:44:40 am »
Can you imagine how difficult that must have been. He has to learn technique, tiller, spine, tip weight, wood selection....etc......etc.......etc.
There is so much to learn even with books and internet and work of mouth. I realize it probably wasn't 1 guy that figured out all of this but it was a monumental task to put all of this together through trial and error only.

My guess would be he was the guy behind the guy that let the sapling go too soon and whacked his buddy in the head, PRESTO! I have an idea!
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

In a lot of ways the early bow makers were way ahead of us. They knew that the wood they had to use and the style of hunting they were doing dictated design. What we see today is we grab a piece of wood and say we are going to make x style of bow. Bow making today is much better than it was 10 years ago but probably not much better than 60 or 70 years ago. They were using great designs in the 1940's. Our generation seems to make better use of heat guns.

One thing is for sure, the first archery contest occurred within 10 minutes of when the first bow was finished.  Og's buddy certainly said something along the lines of "that's cool, bet I can hit that stump"

Actually, I think, Og was refused, and Og soon got the point, that, like Sam Colt in the future, the bow maker, made himself a great equalizer!  ;) 8)

More like, "Og want to shoot bow.......BOOM......splinters in Ogs face."
Remember it was just his first bow.
