Has anyone ever used laminated bamboo backing which appears like quartersawn wood would, as it would not be equivalent to flat sawn wood/

Vertical bamboo flooring is good for cores in laminated bows, but not for backings. The fibers are damaged and it will not nearly be as strong as raw bamboo. It may 'work' in a light weight bow, in the sense that it doesn't fail, but I wouldn't risk it. There's many, much better backings around.

I just talked to John Strunk last weekend and he showed me a bow that was backed with a single piece of bamboo as normal but the belly was this laminated vertical bamboo that you're talking about (at least I think we're talking about the same thing. He said it made a fine compression wood for the belly.
