sinew ???
« on: June 04, 2014, 09:55:54 pm »
I'm going to order some sinew, I need to make a repair on my sons bow in the handle and back a bow I'm building for my self. My questions are how much to order, Back or leg if matters and has any one tried the tite bond hide glue for such. Bow is 56" D bow.
Thanks in advance for any help: Hugh

Why don't you make a post in the trading section.  I'm sure someone will have some extra sinew to trade.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

hide glue and titebond both work with sinew. titebond can be #1,2 or 3. Referred to as TB3, TB2, etc on tis forum (not to be confused with tbb1, tbb2 (traditional bowyers bible). Hide glue gives the best backing performance according to many. , but is succeptable to moisture much more than TB.
backstrap and leg work the same- but
backstrap is easier to process (shred)
backstrap is longer
legs can be very long too if stripped from the carcasss right
as far as ammount- hard to say... someone else will chime in
good luck

Ten leg sinews around ten inches long will usually get at least one layer on any bow, if you get some larger ones and your bow isn't two wide you could easily put down several layers. My general rule on my short bows (46-54" long 1.75" wide at the most) is about four to six leg sinews per layer

Its worth a shot.  You can trade other items or services other than primitive archery stuff.  I wish I had some to trade you but I have already traded just about all of mine away.  I kept enough to do one bow if I get the time to back one.  All I have left are short pieces that I'm going to use to make glue.

I have a fair amount. I do not sinew back much, and use mine mostly for primitive arrows. You could also use rawhide as a patch. Give a holler if ya have trouble finding some.
