A recurve will never 'pull out' unless you make it bend (too far). Underlays smack of 'things gone wrong' to me  >:D
Reflex/deflex with short, tight recurves......if you want a shockfree, very fast wooden bow that's a very good place to start.
I've made quite a few now and its all about planning.

Now yuall', go back and read my post, "the cracks filed out, no need for underlays". You guys seem to be hung up on the underlay thing and proclaim no such things exist in a properly made bow. Look at a Grumly with brush nocks, sure enough, an underlay has been added down the belly to form the brush nock. If I added anything, it would add to the aesthetics of the bow, not some crudely applied patch standing out to offend. This ain't my first rodeo as far as bow making is concerned.

Case closed I guess.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

My buddy Brad Merkel of LittleTree Selfbows makes those as he was inspired by the same book. He definitely widened the tips to something much closer to the width of modern glass recurves which was big change of pace from the micro nocks he had been making before that.

Oh yea...and he also found boiling to be the safest route to avoid cracking.
