still working off christmas list
« on: December 31, 2007, 06:50:33 pm »
I've had a series of bad luck of the holiday making bows, Mainly due to my rushing them. To try and get my list filled. He is some photos  of my friends sinew backed, oak recurve. So bare with me and I will have more photos as it progresses.  I'll be going by feel aswell since my scale is broken, and I'll be a while getting a new one.
heres the sinew and the bow laid out with a steady supply of fuel(ei. coffee) a nice big glass of knox gelatin, and then the drying recurve.

I got a new fancy camera, so im just playing with the shots too.

You will be much happier if you round off those sharp corners by the handle.  Any sharp corners are splinters waiting to happen.  Justin

Ok so since I last left you and have been working on this little bad boy, I got my scale from Ikea and Got to tillering. I got it to 50"@24 My aim was to make in 60lbs @26" however I don't always get what I want. I've noticed that there is a hinge on one of the limbs I'd like some advice from you guys. Gotta give respect where its due. You know what you're doing

Did you let it dry long enough? Your first post and last are only 4 days apart! Re reflex it a bit and let the sinew dry.

I agree with Chris. On the sinew backed bows I've built I let them cure for at least 1 month between sinew courses(I added 3). There is still moisture in the sinew, glue and now the wood that has to dissipate to get the full results of the sinew.    Pat

I haven't tried a sinew backing yet, but am gearing up for it - looks like you did a really slick job of it! Think I'm gonna take the advise of the elders and let it cure for at least a month between courses whenever I do get going :). Looks like it's bending purty good, is your hinge at the knot on right limb?

It had cured a little over a week in that photo. So almost two weeks but the second. How Would I RE reflex the bow if its already sinewed?
strip off the sinew and do it all again?

Holy crap! I was just tillering to get that hinge out, I've shortened the handle by two inches, thinned it, worked the limbs. Took it to 24 and its @47pounds now and taken some set or string follow Im not too sure which is which. Anyways I decided, hmm y'know I bet I can push it to 26"....Im gonna try
KA-BOOM!!!!

my heart stopped thinking that All my time andeffort just exploded into pieces. Thank goodness it was just the knot coming off the knock, The bow is safe and 52#@26"

Looks like the left limb needs to bend more near the handle. Looks like the right limb is doing all the bending at mid limb. I don't see a hinge. I have to go back for another look.

LOL. Loose the tillering stick. My word. The only thing those are good for is to break bows. Back to the Celtics- Pistons. Tirade to continue later. :) Jawge
