"Primitive" Takedown Recurve
« on: May 17, 2014, 05:27:21 pm »
Hi Guys!

Just finised my new bow, it`s a takedown static recurve, 68" NTN, pulling 40#@26".
The riser is maple with some red wood I had around. Limbs are white oak, unbacked, pyramid design, tapering
from 2" to 1/2". The recurves are cut and glued on from a piece of maple. The bow is finished with 2 coats of wood vernish.

Here are some pics... please leave a comment and tell me what do you think and what can I do better next time.

Nice work. I like the front view best. Couldn't really say the bow is primitive, but my only advice is to lower you string arm elbow to where it puts your forearm in line with the arrow.

Oh, and at least shorten the screws so they look finished. Although the wingnuts are unsightly, I understand that you want the bow to be able to be taken down without tools... Does look a little like an ad for a hardware store.  :)

Very cool! Have you ever tried the fiberglass take-down sleeve?

Haven't tried a takedown sleev. I made this bow because the oak board was too short and wasn't enough for a full length one piece bow.

Well guys, is there nothing to say about the tiller?
So many views and just 2 comments? How can I get better like this?  :'(

I'd say it looks pretty good,if anything I'd get your top limb bending a bit more.with such a long riser your limbs are under stressed a bit, maybe a little over built at the draw weight. .nice job spiderman!

like bushboy said tiller is fine but it's not doing a ton of work, how long is your riser?
I've built quite a few 3 pc bows myself and they are a lot of work getting things all lined up and everything, you did things different than I would but all in all good job

The (straight) limbs are attached to the riser at an angle. Since the limbs have only a small recurve and no reflex, you basically introduced deflex into the bow. This bow will probably have a really low early draw weight and low string tension at brace. It currently barely bends in the limbs at all. Typical (modern) takedown recurves have much more dramatic recurves and also significant reflex. This creates a lot of early draw weight, despite the angle that the limbs are mounted to the riser. Although this bow looks good, and there is nothing 'wrong' with it, it probably shoots rather slow and performs like maybe a typical 30-35# flatbow would. You could have increased this bow's potential by either reflexing the limbs, or joining the limbs at zero degrees to the riser. In fact, you could still reflex the limbs by heat/steam and gain a lot more weight. Retillering it down to 40# again is then possible, and would result in a faster and probably better shooting bow.

Basically what DarkSoul says, no point in me adding any more.  "have increased this bow's potential by either reflexing the limbs, or joining the limbs at zero degrees to the riser."   you can buy the steel inserts at home depot and recess them into the riser instead of using wing-nuts.  Or build 2 reflex limbs and drill to fit the current riser. That is the beauty of having a 3 piece.

See, thats why I wanted people to comment. Great info everyone, especialy Darksoul. You realy hit the spot, the bow does have a low early draw weight. I think I'll flatten the riser joints to a zero degree.

I think I would reflex the limbs instead

Better performance overall.

Better performance overall.

Is it a really big difference?

Try it and find out

I have the other half of the white oak board, I`ll start another takedown once I have time for it.
Meanwhile, I`ve flattend the joints and the bow gained 10 pounds!
So, I need to retiller it to weight...
