First Osage Cut! Update!

A buddy and I went today and cut some Osage. It was in a guys yard, he told me if had 13 trees he wanted removed from his yard. I told him why I wanted it and he said that I could cherry pick the ones I wanted. Well it was pretty rough getting them on the ground, the tops were all entangled and was pretty stubborn but we got it done. Only cut 3 trees because it was kinda hot today (84) and sunny.  But I think we had a pretty good haul for the mess we had.  Got a few good logs and some for billets and a little fire wood, maybe.

Nice haul!  Make sure you get the ends sealed with shellac, paint, wood glue, etc. if you haven't already.  Osage starts to check almost as soon as it hits the ground.

I'm a little possessive but I might share. I plan on taking some to Mojam in July!

I sealed them Timbo as soon as I got them home and unleaded. Still meet to do some splitting. We got one split. I need some more wedges! Lol

By the bark they look purty straight for Osage. Nice haul for sure.

Thanks wildman, they are pretty straight so far. But I think I have a little jewel of the snakey kind on the bottom of the stack in the right of the pic.

Looks like he has the gold fever and the subsequent miser syndrome!

Put him to work with a single splitting wedge and a 3# hammer and he'll loosen his grip on those babies!

That's funny JW, I couldn't find the only wedge I had so I used a scrap piece of Osage and a splitting maul and a sledge. It was pretty rough but we got one halfed.  We are both feeling it today!  My buddy actually said he sees why people just buy a stave, lol!

Well me and my buddy have been busy a couple nights this week. We have split out several decent staves, 15 so far. Not sure that all of them will be very good but I think they will make a bow in the right hands. Here is our ingenous way of splitting staves, at least with limited tools right now. It actually worked really well. The jack is 1550lbs max car Jack and we bent it but it got the job done.
We need to get some more real wedges!

Thanks JW, it sure surprised me! In hind sight though I'm not sure it was the best idea. Looking back it put a lot of stress on the wood. Unlike a splitting wedge would.

If any wood can take it it's hickory. And osage. And a few others that are up there in jenka hardness. ;D
