Dana's Wavy Stick (44# snaky osage static)
« on: May 12, 2014, 07:23:11 pm »
The Story
Dana liked my Osage Elk bow and we setup a trade for one.  I don't trade much and I really wanted to do my best and give him something he will enjoy.  This stave was wavy from the top and side profile.  It took a lot of work to get the string to align properly.  I stepped into some new territory with this bow which included horn overlays, fast flight string, and an external rest.  I enjoyed making it and kinda wish I could clone it for my 3D bow.  :)

The Stats
Wood: 20+ year old osage orange
DW: 44# @ 27
Total Length: 64''
Overlays: horn
String: 8 strand fast flight with B50 reinforced loops and double serving (only over knocking section)
Backing: Cloth Snakeskin
Wrap: leather
Rest: hog skin with super glue and deer skin and hair on top

That bottom limb is sure bending more than the top. I would think that if used much the bow won't hold up long being that out of tiller.

Man that turned out slick! I'm still waiting to give him my bow...could ya post a pic of the full draw from the other angle?

There is to much handle above the grip and the limb coming out of the handle on the upper side is much thicker than the one at the bottom, you could fix this by reducing some of that meat above the arrow pass..looks like to much wood there. Wouldn't take much to get this bow perfect.

Thanks for the kind words.  There are definitely a lot of things I'm very happy with on this bow.  The evenness of the tiller is not one of them.  I don't want to adjust the handle as it thins for the arrow shelf but I am lightening the top limb to even them out more.  I'll post an updated tiller pic when I get er done.  Note there is a big S curve above the handle that has slightly softer wood that I don't want to muck with too much.  Thanks again!
Thanks,

I lightened the top limb a good bit to even out the tiller.  It's bending much better.  The tiller was not that off before shooting in the bow.  But, after 100 arrows the bottom limb bent quite a bit more.  I made the mistake of not rechecking it after.

I use a lower hand position than many because I typically make bows with shelves.  The cradle of my thumb hits around the exact centerline of the bow and I shoot 3 under.  Because of this I think I often see more bend in the bottom limb.  I suspect that if I made the bottom limbs of my bows an inch or two longer it would be easier for me to get nice even tillers.  I may test this theory out on my next bow.

Thanks again for the compliments and comments.  This bow was a great learning experience!

Looks much better, beautiful bow,the finish work is exceptional, you are right on the 3 under,it will change the tiller and needs to be accounted for if that is how a bow is going to be shot. Some think it make no difference but I assure you it does. :) Looks like you got her all evened up now. Nice work. :)
