Bow backing
« on: May 06, 2014, 06:07:11 am »
Good morning people.

I am doing a red or white oak board bow - not sure wich oak is.
It was planned to be a 68" tip to tip pyramid design, with a non bendig handle, but due to a mistake i made, i had to get it just a hair over 63", so it will end up 61" NTN.
The maximum width at fades is 2", tappering down to 1/2" tips.
My question is, since i had to take it to 63", and i was planning to get  45/50# at 28", should i back it?
If so, with what? Rawhide? Silk? Fiberglass tape?
Or do you think 63" is enough and i dont need backing?

Thanks sinto advance

It depends on the board, the grain of the board and if there are runoffs. 45#-50#@28" draw is possible for a 63" bow but you will have to do your part. I would back it with silk or rawhide just for insurance.
