How Do YOU Do it?

Hi guys.
 Just a little question.
I`ve seen people tillering, leaving the bow braced while they are scraping
and others check the tiller and then unbrace the bow and scrap it.

Is one way better then the other?
I usually unbrace the bow while scraping and I`d like to know if
I`m doing it for nothing.

Other than the scraper cutting the bows string , wich is not fun, it does not make much differance ,except the length of time you have left it strung
let it relax once in awhile
Un stringing is the best practice but not absolutely necessary!

Once I get a bow to brace height, I leave it strung while scraping. But I tiller for fairly short periods so the bow isn't over-stressed in the early going.

Once I have it close to full brace height, I leave it strung...for the most part.

Hey Dor,
    I tiller mine over my knee till I am a couple inches past brace height, no string till then. Then it gets a regular string and the tiller is checked for symmetry at brace and corrected as necessary. Then I exercise the bow a small amount (about 1/3 draw) and correct again untill I'm satisfied that the bend is the same all the way along. ( Bow is strung for this time) ...after this it's tillered under tension to full draw length and weight (tillered string on).  I only use the tree if I need to hit an exact weight and use the tree so I can use the scale.

PS: Most people do not do it this way. Also my bows are usually circle tiller and bend their entire length. ::)

cut one string with my scraper before and almost lost all my front teeth. Now when I scrape while braced I throw a piece of duct tape over the other side

The bows I'm doing now are all done by tapering the edges, don't touch the belly, I just put the bow in the vice and continue tapering untill the tiller looks the way I want it.

Most of of the time I unstring. If the fades need work I leave it strung. If the last third needs work, I unstring so as not to cut the string which I almost did once. Jawge

One of the first things I noticed on my first bows was that I could remove quite a bit of material from it while strung and it would look the same until I unstrung and restrung and find a nice little hinge so I've always scraped unstrung

I do it both ways. Can't tell that it makes a difference. You do have to keep an eye on the string though. Never have cut one. Knock on wood!

Kind of makes sense why, untill you get the tiller done then like you say leave it braced in the corner for a while and let 'er sweat.

I tiller on the long string with my gizmo until I can run the gizmo up the limbs with the pencil 1/16" off the limbs and not make a mark. At this point I go to the short string to drop poundage and refine the tiller. After I get to the short string I never unstring the bow during scraping sessions.
