Redneck log sled and some osage logs
« on: April 12, 2014, 10:17:38 pm »
I've been trying to find a better way to get logs out of the woods and to my garage since I don't have any big equipment to use.  The other day I had an idea for a simple log sled made from a plastic drum.  I cut the top off and then cut it in half vertically.  I cut the bottom off one half and bolted them together.  I drilled a hole in the front to run the rope through.  It only took a few minutes to make.  We tried it out on a couple of osage trees today.  It worked great!   I looped the rope across the log and then put the sled on top.  Then I rolled it over and it was in the sled and ready to go.  We had one log that wanted to roll on us as we were pulling it.  I think I'm going to drill a hole on each side of the front and use a double looped rope.  I think that will make it more stable.

Our haul for the day.  Four full length logs, one billet length log, two second growth pieces and a solid dead limb.  All from two fallen trees.  It took less than three hours to cut and haul it all to the garage with the sled.  The two outside logs are from my a tree that my grandpa hunted out of years and years ago when the tree was still standing.  He had 2x4 blocks nailed to it for steps.

A couple of the old steps are still on this one.

Hey, Clint?  Was that the Legacy Tree where your Dad carved your Mom's initials when they were dating?

If so, I think there is a cupid bow in that log somewhere!!!

JW, That is not the same tree.  I'm watching that one.  If and when it falls, its getting cut.

Thanks for the help Tracy.  I'm going to see how much I can split tomorrow.

I hope you wait until your grandkids cut that tree....and find your initials.

Sweet mary have fun splitting those! Nice sled though, looks like it worked great!

EDIT: Those would probably make some great lumber and board bows/laminates if you could get em milled.

the lower part is raised up,
the part that has too much is reduced,
the part that has too little is increased."

Good ingenuity Clint. I found an old car body close to where I was cutting one time. Remembered how we would use the hood as a sled in the winter and next thing you know I had em dragged up to where I could load them.

With the energy Clint saved getting the logs back home on the sled he should have no problem splitting the logs.  ;)   Is this the tree you got the pole from Clint?

Yes Pat.  Yours is the small one in front on top of the logs.

Two ways to solve problems: Throw tons of money at it, or use yer noggin!

Good thinkin!  And nice haul too.  Should be a bow or two hidden in there.  Have fun spitting it all and debarking. :D
