A Back Country Adventure
« on: April 02, 2014, 12:33:57 am »
Did a kayaking trip down the St. Johns River from 520 to 46 (roughly 35 mi).  This was a 3 day trip and quite the adventure.  Here are a few photos along with some narrative.

1 of over 200 alligators seen

Just across the river from Tosohatchee

Met this guy, Jim.  He was heading to Jacksonville from 520

A huge forest fire out on the floodplain

climbed a cypress tree to see what was in it.  Found a snake (yellow ratsnake) and a pair of sleep coons.

BIG FIRE!

somewhere between 46 and 50 there was another shack

Found this snapping turtle digging in the mud, presumably for mussels

All in all it was a great trip.  Me and another kayak tour guide did this and we'll be guiding through this portion of the river next week.

Florida to Kwajalein to Turkey and back in Florida again.  Good to be home but man was that an adventure!

Thanks guys.  I guide kayak tours and me and another guide were actually exploring a new route for an event called Expedition Brevard where our county hosts a bunch of outdoor activities.  Kayaking this stretch of this river will be one of the activities folks can sign up for so he and I will be guiding it next week.  I'll film the trip then.  I do regret bringing my camera gear but it was nice to relax and not worry about filming stuff the whole time.  I fished very little and didn't catch anything.  I did get really close to the coons and one sleepily moved away but they didn't seem to care that I was up in the tree with them like 5 feet away.

I hope the trip next week is as adventurous.  I told my boss to advertise to young single fit women.  It's a key demographic. lol  >:D
