55lbs @ 27" Hickory Self Bow (with some character)
« on: March 26, 2014, 06:08:22 pm »
Hey all, I've been really busy with college classes and guitar lately but over the past few months I've reserved a little time to work on bows. Here's my latest effort. 64" overall, 2" at the fades tapering to 3/8" tips and self-nocks, takes about an inch of set. There's also a pretty substantial knot in the lower limb and a gouge in the upper limb, other than that, this was a pretty good stave. My last few bows came in under weight (around 40lbs) because I rushed them and then had to fix the tiller, then fix the tiller again, and the result was a light bow. So I really took my time tillering this one (lots of scraping with a Mora) and I'm really happy with it. Its definitely the fastest bow I've made. It shoots even my heavier hunting arrows quickly towards to the target. I also shoot well with it so this is definitely going to be one of most used. I've made several bows this style from hickory (half dozen or so) so I painted the back and sewed on a gator skin handle just to spice things up a bit and give it more of a native look.
Here are the pictures, let me know what you think!

Full Draw! Well, about an inch short of F/D but its close enough.  :)

Very nice work! Like hickory, set and all. Should provide some meat for the freezer.
