white oak backed ipe COMPLITED!
« on: March 17, 2014, 06:11:03 am »
Hi Guys.
I just finished my new bow (thanks to all the great people here that helped!).
It`s White oak backed Ipe. 64" long (a bit short due to grain run-out), reflex-deflex design. Very slim- 1 1/2" width tapering
/to 3/8" tips. 7/8" thick. Tiller isn`t perfect, but I`m pleased with it.
This bow is a first timer for me in some ways- first time with ipe, first time using wood backing, first time I glued
an arrow shelf (instead of cutting it into the bow).

Well, enough talk`n, here are some pics:

Any feedback and criticism will be most appreciated.

Looks like a fine bow, I really like the wood combos on the handle.

I Don`t have a scale so I know the draw wight. My draw length is 26".
The Woods I used for the handle are oak and 2 other woods I had around, don`t know what kind.
The site seem to re size the pics, sorry...

Try refining and reducing your tips, otherwise a good looking bow.

Nice job on that one, I hope my first R/D bow comes out with such a nice bend. I am eager to work on some white oak/hickory backed ipe bows soon. Will probably occupy my time as the white oak i'm planning on cutting is drying.

Can you be more specific?

Instead of leaving your tips square and chunky looking, try and make them more round and pointy. They not only look better, but they also reduce hand shock a bit and make your bow a little bit faster.

If you have a decent scale you can do the board with a notch and pull down trick... thats got to have a name, someone correct me please! I did not have a decent scale so I was not a real fan of this technique to find draw weight but if you really want to know the draw weight try suspending objects from the string until it reaches full draw and then weigh the objects... kind of silly but its the only way I can get a measurment for kids bows under 10#. Im sure these more vetran guys have a less cobjob aproach!

Nice work!  A luggage scale will work in a pinch.  I have a little ten dollar one from walmart that I use for kids bows.  The walmart bit was meant more for Neolithicman, but I'm sure you can find a low cost luggage scale somewhere in Israel.  Josh
