First Self-Bow - Hackberry
« on: February 24, 2014, 10:04:36 am »
I've posting photos of this bow in progress for the last few weeks.  Thought I'd post the final pics.  It's my first self-bow from a stave after a dozen board bows.  It's from a 10" hackberry tree in my backyard, cut last October, quickly cut to floor tiller shape with hand tools only, and dried indoors.  It's been a wonderfully fulfilling experience. one which I will always remember.  You guys in this forum gave me the inspiration (and after reading the TBB's) after viewing your beautiful bows, and believe me I'm grateful for all the helpful comments, suggestions, etc. during the past months.  It's a simple flat bow from a fairly straight stave.  It's unbacked,  68" ntn, 45# @ 28", 5" long grip with 2 1/2" fades 1 5/8" wide, parallel to about 5/8 length of limb then tapering to 1/2" tips.  Mass is 24 0z.  The tips overlays are padauk, the string is 12 strands of Dacron B-50.  The bow shoots very accurately, smooth and with very little hand shock.  I've got more staves drying in my garage from that tree and am looking forward to starting another one.  Here's to all you great bowyers :)

i like everything about that bow. Sweet tiller and nice details. I especially like the contrasting colors between the bow and your tip overlays.

That grip rolled over like that is very cool George. Great first stave bow, mine was not so slick!

Nice work.  Looks like you picked a nice stave to transition from boards to staves.  That is a neat thing when you can harvest your bow wood in your own backyard.

No sooner did the soft, sweet note of the bow-string charm the ear of genius than music was born, and from music came poetry and painting and..." Maurice Thompso

Thanks, everyone.   Carson, now that I've done that, I find myself looking at trees in a totally different way.

Keep an eye out for saplings George, they make fantastic bows. Very resilient compared to their older cousins quite often.
