Found something splitting Hickory today

I was splitting some Hickory today and saw something white in side of the split.

Looks like an old insulator for a power line. My dad collects these, I don't know that I've seen any in white porcelain though. He's got some black ones, and quite a few glass ones.

Electric fence insulator. Someone had some cattle where you were cutting at one time or another.

It was a pretty good size tree. probably close to 14 inches across at the stump. A nd yes always wear safety glasses splitting out staves. I have seen pieces of those steel wedges fly off also. Just like a bullet.

Those ceramic insulators make good arrow straightening tools. Cool find!  8)

As Dean hinted at, I would consider grinding off that edge of the wedge. It will eventually fly off anyway, and could do some unexpected damage... :)
