My first Osage collection rings on 3
« on: February 15, 2014, 09:26:34 pm »
My friend Nic and I drove two hours north to this Osage grove he knows. We did all the cutting by hand and man am I beat. We got some really good staves though. Longest pieces are about 65"

There was a black berry bush wrapped all around this second tree that we had to clear out.

That looks like some good times right there.  Nice haul.  Make sure you seal the ends.

Yup tb2 is drying now. Any other tips on drying/seasoning? Should I split the wider ones one more time?

I can't really tell how big they are.  If you split them to small they might start warping on you.  Make sure to seal the backs if you remove the bark and sapwood.  That looks like young bark.  I bet the rings are pretty thick.

Bring home some osage is always a good feeling  8). Don't forget some of them small limbs. I've made some sweet bows from 2" limbs. Cutting osage is also more fun with a chainsaw :). You sure earned it doing it with a ax

Nice load of wood! Next time you go, cut you a couple of those overhanging limbs too. They already have some nice back set to them, but the ones I've made like that were a challenge to tiller.
