I'm glad there aren't bodies laying around there.  That's a classic barber chair cut which is pretty dangerous my friend.   Maybe next time do your face cut( hinge) then bore through an inch and a half behind the hinge and back cut.  I've seen that go bad too many times.  Hope the staves work out.

Hickory is just about the strongest wood I've ever used for a bow. When roughing out I've taken 1/4 inch strips and tried to break them apart and it is almost impossible. Jawge

I watched as a landowner did this with an ash tree and it smashed his tractor.  It was close to smashing him.

He put a face cut in it and then got the saw pinched when he was still several inches from getting through to the face cut....so he decided to raise his front end to the max and give the tree a push.  I yanked the saw out then watched as he decided to just push it the rest of the way.  It just split and then came back at him when it all split loose.  He was lucky it just smashed the tractor.

The humanities grew out from archery as a flower from a seed
No sooner did the soft, sweet note of the bow-string charm the ear of genius than music was born, and from music came poetry and painting and..." Maurice Thompso
