Nocking point ideas
« on: February 13, 2014, 07:42:00 am »
Does anyone have any better ideas for nocking points besides the 'modern' brass ones available in the stores?   I am looking to keep my bow as primitive as I can within reason.

Nock your arrow where you want it, then with the arrow on the string, tie a colored thread above and below the nock on the string. Easy as that!

I use thread or dental floss to tie my nocking point on. :)

I was thinking about something more like a physical stopping point like the brass nocking points, rather than a reference mark that thread were to give you.  I'm thinking maybe a scrap of leather lace, or something of the sort.   Just wondering what everyone else around here were using.

Falcon, you wrap the thread or dental floss until it builds up a bit making a physical stopping point. I think this is what Pappy was suggesting.

Unwaxed dental floss for me.
Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer

I never used those brass nocks. I use string coated with Duco. Until I am sure of the nock point I use some 3/8 in windings of duct tape.

the last bow i did i used imitation sinew...basically waxed linen...i put the maim nock point under..wrapped a bit up under the arrow nock and then wrapped a wee bit more above the arrow nock.shot it a bit ...just the nocking of the arrow pushed the waxed linen toward the knockpoints and built them both up...shot for weeks like that..then realized i was wearing my string out...so i wrapped more of the waxed linen as the serving string...seems to be wrking fine...and looks more like it could have been done back in the day...will post a pic in a bit..lol

Another vote for unwaxed floss.  I'm so cheap I use "used" floss.  Clean my teeth, hang it on the towel bar to dry, then wrap it on like serving above and below the arrow.  Also wrap feathers and self nocks on arrows the same way.   ::)

I'm glad I'm not the only one to re-use my floss!  It makes a good wind indicator too if you shred up the end and tie it to your bowstring.
