Knotty Osage

This is my current project. A year old osage stave, straight but knotted like a piece of ERC. Luckily the knots are all pretty much in the center of the limbs.So far 1 7/8" wide tapering at mid limb; 65" long.

I seen a tip like that some time back the guy had drilled out the knot he ran a long string loop through the belly side brought the loop over the tip to the belly side again.the bow was very dark osage and apeared to have been around awhile.

Osage Outlaw -- I'm 'knot' sure what I'll do with the knot on the end  ;D. I remember seeing the bow omha2 is talking about. That's still an option, although I was planning on cutting off the tip just below the knot, that would allow for a 64" bow.

The other quandary is the knot mid-limb, I'm thinking I'll probably drill it out. I did that on a hickory pyramid bow--drilled a hole all the way through and left it. The difference here though is that the knot doesn't go through to the back, so I guess it would get drilled about halfway through. Any thoughts...?

Pat B. So far this stave has been a lot of fun, the handle pretty much designed itself, the way it split.

Good looking stave,I wouldn't drill it,I would pick out the dead/rotten stuff and leave it be. The grain will grow down into the knot so no violations by picking it out. Good luck,should make a nice bow. Sure looks older than a year,love that dark colored Osage. :)

                That handle is going to be absolutely beautiful with all those knots and grain...Can't wait to see it! Are you planning on wrapping the handle or leaving the natural beauty naked?

Certainly has potential to be a dandy looking bow.  I'd just pick out the dead wood in the knots as Pappy said.  I typically soak the inner area of the knot it thin superglue after cleaning it out. May not be needed but I do it just in case for extra insurance as the knot wood usually dries at a different rate and often times has small, almost invisible checks.  Best of luck.
