Dogwood checks like crazy. I'd split it, take the bark off, and seal the ends and back really well.

I cut a dogwood tree about a month ago. I cut it to length(three 7' poles) and sealed the ends with shellac. About 2 weeks ago I split the butt log and resealed the ends and about 6" down the split side. I noticed very little end checking so far. I haven't removed the bark but I don't see it as a difficult task later.

I’m shooting a dogwood bow and have several staves drying right now. I would not remove the bark. Seal the ends and let it dry slowly.

Pat, cool!
The only big problem I have here with leaving bark on is that bugs tend to riddle my bark-on staves. Not much of a problem this time of year, though.
