I wonder if ol' Howard would be embarrassed by how we hold him up as such a holy prophet?
Side note: On Turner Classic Movies today there was a movie short of Howard Hill sailing on the coast of Mexico to hunt marlin with a bow. They started with him shooting flying fish off the deck of the boat. Imagine that! Archery hunting, fishing, and wingshooting ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!!
Once they collected a few flying fish, they used them as teasers behind the boat to draw in the marlin. When the marlin came within range, he hit them with a modified fishing arrow with a harpoon style head. He shot two of them in pretty quick succession and reeled them in on conventional saltwater tackle.
Then for the third one, he arrowed it and the "boy" on board took over fighting the fish from a small rowboat. They portrayed the marlin as an evil killing machine bent on dealing death to any that crosses their path. The fellow in the rowboat handling the oars stands up to smack the charging marlin on the head and falls in as the marlin pierces the rowboat. Just before this you see the marling scooting thru the water at high speed on it's side. The rowboat is suspiciously sliding sideways thru the water as well.
They apparently wanted to make a really cool clip, so they made break-away sides on the boat so that they could pull the marlin thru. It's laughable special effects, even though the rest of the movie short was pretty interesting. The slow-mo shots of Howard hitting a flying fish about the size of a skinny 10" trout is pretty flipping cool!
