Seasoning horn?
« on: January 27, 2014, 10:34:23 pm »
I bought 60 water buffalo horns recently, about 6" - 8" long. I guess they were freshly cut. A week or two after I bought them, they all started to crack, or I guess "check" around the bases of the horn. All of them. So I freaked out a bit, cost me about 120 dollars for all of them. I contacted highland horn (not where bought them from) and asked them about it, they said to dip the ends in boiling cabinet wax and forget about them for a year, and after that they will be good to go. Anybody have experience with anything like this? I didn't know you had to season horn like you season wood!!!

the part that has too little is increased."

I have never worked with Asiatic Horn, but Bison Horn will get all weird on you in a quick hurry. I used to scrape, wax, and let stand in a cool place with a bit of humidity for a few months...Used to make powder horns. Never had cattle horns crack. Heck I have a 150 year old horn with no cracks, just some bug holes..
