Spring Thaw Selfbow Shoot at Hawkeye Bowmen
« on: January 21, 2014, 11:42:00 am »
Hawkeye Bowmen will be hosting our Annual Spring Thaw Selfbow Shoot on April 25,26 and 27 2014.
Hawkeye Bowmen is located in Western New York at 11330 Clinton Street (Rte354) Marilla New York.
In the past we have attracted around 50 Shooters so there should be plenty of room to setup your Camp (Some Camps are of a Historical Reenactment Style but any kind of Tent is fine). This is a Family Friendly Selfbow Only Shoot. We put out about 20 or so targets that you can shoot as often as you like. There is also a Practice Range setup. Primitive Camping Only (No Electric Hookups). We have a Clubhouse with water and flush toilets along with some Outhouses. Gates open at noon on April 25th and the Courses close at noon on the 27th. We run some fun contests (like a one log fire contest, a cooking contest, a Woodswalk and a Clout Shoot) throughout the Weekend and we have a Pot Luck Dinner in the Clubhouse on Saturday Evening. In the past there have been a few guys working on making bows and also some Trade Blankets out (If you have Primitive Archery Items to trade / sell bring them) There is no Kitchen open for this Shoot but there are some places to eat nearby in case you do not want to bring your own food. If you are looking for a laid back fun Primitive Shoot this one might  be of interest to you. If you can't Camp I would suggest attending on Saturday (as that day has the most going on). looking forward to seeing some old Friends and making some new ones,
Brian

Bring a tent Jon, camping is free, or just bring a sleeping bag and crash in the clubhouse!

Jon,
Tent would be best. On Friday Night a local cub scout pack and their leaders are staying in the Clubhouse. Many of these kids have never been exposed to Archery so it will be fun having them. They will be staying just Friday Evening so the Clubhouse will be vacant for Saturday Evening.

Sounds good Brian. If i manage to stay the night it will either be in a tent or the back of my car. Looking foward to it. What time do you guys typically do the one log fire contest?

The snow Kevin is talking about made for excellent conditions for our annual Snow Shoe Shoot Yesterday. It should be gone by April maybe.

Just had a blizzard yesterday that dumped another foot of snow at Hawkeye, if this keeps up we might have to rename this shoot and call it SNOWJAM!!!! :o

Put in some work this morning starting to get ready for the shoot. We hauled out a bunch of campfire wood and Dino started to put together some of his ideas for this year's Woodswalk. I think him and Eric have some really cool stuff planned.
We received a very generous prize prize donation  from Hawkeye Member Joe Carbone. Joe has donated the finest Hawk I have ever seen! Kevin took some pictures of it to post here. Also received a extremely nice hand crafted Turkee Caller from Buffalo Hunter Calls (Buffalo Gobbler)

Here is a tentative list of events for the Spring Thaw Shoot:
Friday Evening - Campfire cooking contest / bring your entry over to Buffalo Gobbler at HBHQ Camp/ Prize will be awarded at Saturday's Pot Luck Dinner
Friday Evening - One log fire making contest near HBHQ Camp (Brian will explain the rules at that time but this will give you a idea on what to expect/ You will need a primitive fire kit, no matches or lighters, a knife or axe and a container to boil a cup of water in/ You will pick out One log from our firewood bin, start your fire and maintain it till your cup of water boils using just that one log you picked out/ first one to get their water boiling wins/ Prize will be awarded at Saturday's Pot Luck Dinner
Saturday- Hawk and Knife throw- held on our Practice Range / bring your own or use the supplied hawk and knife/ Pam and Tom will explain the scoring  at that time/ Prize will be awarded at Saturday's Pot Luck Dinner
Saturday Woodswalk Qualifier - held on Practice Range/ Dine and Eric will explain the scoring at that time/ afterwards those who qualified for the Woodswalk will be contacted
Saturday Woodswalk- Dino and Eric have a extremely challenging event planned. In addition to being able to shoot your bow well, Entrants will need to demonstrate various primitive Woodsmanship skills (If you are not a Finalists you can go along as a Spectator)
Saturday Pot Luck Dinner in the Clubhouse (bring a dish to pass) Prizes and Drawings will be held
Saturday Evening Trade Session- held on the Clubhouse deck after the Dinner is over (bring any Primitive Archery items you care to trade)

Also Hole in the Bow Chuck is going to setup under the Shelter to do some bowmaking if anyone wants to join him
