Any Hardwood is going to give you a pretty good point. Slow cook it over a fire until it starts to change color. This is how the aboriginal's did it and it seemed to have worked for them.

I think you might be on to something that could work, but I would think you would need a much harder wood than sweetgum or oak. I bet you could make some out of persimmon and heat treat it just a bit. I have read that fire hardened wooden points hold up better. Persimmon was once used for golf clubs, so I would think it could handle the impact better. Just a thought from a guy who hasn't tried it for himself
