Or a really thin strip of hickory.

Maple would be great.  I've backed some lighter woods fantastically with his strips.

Don't mean to steal your thread, but my question is the same topic.  When you use backing strips of wood, do the backing strips need to be taken down to a single ring as you would a stave?  And is there any other material that adds draw weight to the bow like sinew does?

Knocker, all wood backings add weight.  Most guys prefer backings cut ring bias ////or vertical grain lllll  so chasing a ring would be impossible. Justin

Hi,
I've backed cherry boards with 1/8" quarter sawn (vertical grain) hickory, and 3/16" quarter sawn maple, and both have worked very well. Super strong, little string follow. I suppose rawhide would also work well (have not tried it myself). Cherry is pretty light, and can be a bit brittle. The bows I've made with it have turned out well.
