Osage stained leather handle

Here's a leather handle I did on a recent build, the leather was untouched veg tan leather stained with some osage stain I made from osage chips and shavings. Thought I would show off my super advanced leather staining skills, (  ;D  )





The next thing I wanna try is making a stain out of ipe.

Thanks! (I was just joking about my "skills" just to be clear, I am the most crap tastic leather worker there is, I can barely get a darn handle right,  ;D) I stained a shooting tab with it, and hung it up in my shop near the window a couple weeks ago, and it has darkened substantially. Although I hear leather will darken from UV light anyhow, so I don't know what to think really.

Very cool.  I wonder if you tried the same thing with black locust if it would be darker.  What was the process you went through?  Did you simply soak chips in water?

Just boil the crap out of em in a big pot, drain, than boil the water down.

Nice exclamation point on that bow! Is that ebony and doesn't that bend just a little there? Looks real nice and smooth.

I made some osage dye at one point. Happened by accident, was using a 3" double wall water heater vent pipe to steam a limb on an osage stave. Had it at a 45 degree angle so the water would run back into the pot I had on a hot plate. Used a storm collar screwed to the bottom of the pipe, fit well into to top rim of the pot. Then covered the crack around the pot and storm collar with aluminum foul. Used an old t-shirt stuffed in the top around the stave to keep the heat in. Anyways the water that was left in the base when I was done was an extremely dark dark dark yellow. If it touched anything it was instantly osage colored. Still got half a jar of the stuff. Never thought about staining the handle leather with it.

I steamed a full length Black Cherry one time to get a nasty propeller twist out. A couple of days later I went to drain the pan that held the leftover water. It was BRIGHT red and smelled just like a Cherry cough drop - HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Bob

Excellent. Just the colour I was looking for.
Just have to dig out the osage shavings from all the others now.

That is a great color.  Did you get around to trying ipe yet?

I'm going to have to save my osage shavings from now on...

I accidentally stained some sinew once, left some sinew scraps in a pan of water after backing a bow ended up getting some yew shavings in it , by the time the water evaporated the sinew was the color of beef jerky
