how do you know when to start tillering?

my bow has taken shape and its bending but i have no idea how stiff it should be before i throw a string on it and start to tiller it. how can i determine if its bending enough to tiller?

If it's bending then you have reached the floor tiller stage. The next step is "long string tillering". use a string that is exactly as long as the bow. then look in a mirror as you draw it slightly. or better yet, draw it a little, have someone snap a pic, and post it here!

yes but how much should i be able to bend it by using the floor, before i put a string on it?

If it will bend at all, it's ready for the long string.

It is hard, when you are first starting out, to know when the bow is ready for the short string.

I try to get the stave to have good bending with the long string. Bending should start at the end of the fades and increase as you go to the tips with maybe the last 6 inches a little stiff.

I keep checking weight as I long string tiller. When I get around 10 inches of string movement (not tip movement...string movement) and 5 lbs greater than the bow weight I want I string it at a low brace of 2-3 inches.

Grab an already complete bow, FG or wood and flex a tip on the floor. This will give you a good idea of what type of floor tillering resistance your feeling for as you ready it for a short brace or tight string.
