Greenish bark, lots of moss, lots of twists and bends?

I've seen a couple that tall, but there I harvest it's rare. Lots of clusters, but I actually get my best staves from standalone trees. In my experience the wood can handle having very little crown from larger diameter staves, but it is a tension strong wood and so should do its best with some crown.

Black locust. Black locust everywhere.
Mollegabets all day long.
Might as well make them short, save some wood to keep warm.

Can you find a leaf? VM has a distinct leaf. Vine maple has 7-11 lobes. Doug maple has 3-5. Vine maple is rare on the Island, usually an escaped ornamental.

Oh, leaves are no where near the size of a Bigleaf maple

Depends where you live on the island.  Its like Hawthorn plenty of it down south but north island there is Zilch.  In most instances you will find Vine maple higher up and/or near creek beds.  This stuff is all clusters..
