Predator Frisbee! :o :o  I don't think it is a Dollie jig, as it doesn't have the pins up, so you can cross the stitches.  Unless you were making a ring.  Yep, nice ring.  I used to make things like that.  A long time ago.  You might be right on the lid idea, but I think it may be something else.  I haven't a clue.  Some of the machinists  on here should know.  Find out where the person who gave it to your Wife got it, and that should help you trace back to it's origin, and use.  Or at least help others on here have a better guess at it's use.  If it were about 7 or 8 ft. tall by about 7-8 ft. wide, and Really thick, and the spokes were about 2-3- inches in diameter, I'd say a bank vault door!  ;D ;D

Is it for weaving baskets?  You could use it to get the bottom flat and then retract the spikes to remove it.

Well, I didn't think about the retracting of the spokes part, so it might be a craft project jig, for making hot pads, and such.  Or like Osage Outlaw said for starting baskets.  What the heck, whatever it is, use it for something else, till you find out it was the firing mechanism for a nuclear warhead. :o :o :o :P

Google "antique yarn flower making tool"

I copied and pasted this from a person selling one.

This is a very clever brass device to make sweet little yarn flowers for a variety of knitting projects. The small dial on top turns to reel the tiny spokes in and out. When in the out position, you wind and tie off yarn to make a “flower;” then remove the “flower” by turning the dial to reel the spokes in. The flowers can be crocheted together to make blankets, scarves, sweaters, hats and more.

This winder will come in a small vintage card box and includes the original Hero brand Crazy-Daisy Winder instruction pamphlet, a needle, and an additional afghan pattern cut from an old magazine.

Shows wear and some tarnish, but works perfectly.

Measures almost 2” in diameter (not including extended spokes).
