A different kind of Christmas gift
« on: December 18, 2013, 06:41:07 pm »
About a month ago I went hunting and ended up sitting under an old tree stand that my Dad had built years ago.  While I was sitting there I remembered something about that old stand and it gave me an idea.  The weather has been cold and snowy for the last few weeks so I haven't been able to make it back out to the stand.  Today is the warmest day we have had for a while and the wife is madder than a hornet from fighting with customer service reps on the phone over a Christmas gift order that got screwed up on their end.  So I thought it would be a great time to take a walk in the woods and head back to that old stand.  Nobody has hunted out of it in years.  The old osage tree is spreading out and pulled a lot of the nails out of it.

What I'm after are those two handrails that are hanging up there.

I took my tree pruner and some rope and in no time I had them pulled down off the tree.  I was happy to see that it was still there after all those years.  B + S 1984.  My Dad carved his and my Moms initials and the date with a chainsaw when he built the stand.  I was 4 years old at the time.  I was probably running around the hillside while he was building it.

When I got them home I pulled the nails out, tied them together, and then wrapped them up.  We are having Christmas with my parents this Saturday.  I hope they like getting some old 2x4's as one of their gifts.  My dad has a bunch of deer mounts hanging in his garage.  I think the boards would look good hanging underneath of them.  Most of the deer were killed out of that stand.  If they don't want them I'll take'em back and hang them up in my garage.

Really neat stuff there Clint....I've got the similar thing incubating in the woods now for about 15 years,  My father-inlaw help me build a permanent tree stand long ago and we dated it and put notches for every doe and buck killed out of that stand, maybe my grandkids will have the same memories as you.
Very thoughtful of you Clint.

By the way, remind me to share with you my design for tree stands that won't break apart as yours did in the wind and with tree growth (slip-joints)  ;) :)

I like the way you think, Clint. Good work.

Almost 30 years ago. That's a great save. I'm sure they will be touched.
