osage design question

well I came by some nice 20 year old osage from a guy in Michigan who planned to make a few bows but never got around to it.
I started splitting them down more yesterday.   This is one of the sets of billets that really interests me.  At first when I looked at them I thought to put the bend out at the tips but now I'm wondering if it would be better to put the  bend out of the handle area?  I'll use my take down sleeves.  What do you think?

Yep, at the tips as Pearly mentioned. With that much reflex right out of the handle, stress relief for those limbs would be long and make for a slower bow...........Art

That top pair already looks like a takedown static recurve!  Most of the work is done - now you just have to remove the parts that don't look like a bow...

I was thinking the same thing Timbo.  I'm looking forward to making into a bow shortly.  I just wanted to think of all the options and have seen where people put more bend in the handle area.  I'll put them out on the tips.  I think its plenty long.  Should a good static tip be 64" or 66"?

I think with those curves being natural, you could make them lighter and therefore would still be strong. Probably wouldn't wind up with any extra tip weight. But it's all about design anyhow.  I know 65" works fine ;)........Art

If you leave them as is and don't hook them over more your really only building a flip tipped flat bow and those tips will bend, so the typical 62-63" ntn is good. Just remember the string shouldn't be touching the bow once your half drawn or so. If the hooks are too big and the string touches them the whole draw, or most of it, you gain zero from the recurves. Short statics are key.

Anything you do with those staves and billets is gonna be nice I bet. Love the well seasoned stuff and those bits of character that are bound to be in those pieces of osage should make for some nice bows. Post some pics of the build along the way if your able, I'd like to see those come together.
