My favorite backstop is the ground behind the cats' fuzzy toys.
I also use a hay bale with a canvas drop cloth sitting on top (not folded - just crumpled loosely). The canvas cloth stops arrows from ricocheting off the top of the bale and terrorizing the neighbors.
