BL growth rings separating?
« on: December 07, 2013, 05:08:03 pm »
ive been slowly roughing out some black locust billets, and im noticing occasional separation of the growth rings, like the early wood just let go.  you can actually pull up little pieces with your fingers.  seems like very brittle wood.  this is the first time i worked with it.  the one crack you can really see on camera is actually following a "lunar" ring... right near the back.  any one ever experience this or know the cause?  drying to fast?

also, how would you guys rate this based on growth rings late/early wood ratio?

i know it would be less than thrilling if it were osage, but i don't know about locust

That's happened to me mostly when I dry a stave too fast. Smooth and round things out before you make any tough decisions.

Black locust. Black locust everywhere.
Mollegabets all day long.
Might as well make them short, save some wood to keep warm.
