Sinew backed hickory Cheyenne and Apache replicas
« on: December 04, 2013, 12:45:56 am »
Both bows are 45" tip to tip. Both are hickory backed with 3 layers of deer sinew. The green Apache replica is less than 1" wide at the handle and 3/4" wide mid limb. It is the narrowest bow I have made. 54# @ 21.5". Sections of wood are cut out on the sides and painted with red ocher. 3 ply sinew string. Arrows are wild rose and phragmities.
The Cheyenne replica has a heavy draw of 76# @ 22.5". The sinew back is painted with red ocher. Thick 3 ply sinew string. The arrows are all dogwood. Most of the feathers are wild turkey. In place of eagle and buzzard I used Canadian goose. Looks close.

Awesome.  Some serious bending going on there.  Please send me all your arrows--I want them.

These are sweet. How long would something like this have to be to draw it to 27"?

I would say about 54" safely, with Osage and sinew you could probably get away with slightly shorter but the tiller would have to be really good and it would definitely have to bend in the handle.  That would certainly be outside my ability to create.

Impressive and educational. I had to look up phragmities.
