Clarify please
« on: November 20, 2013, 04:47:18 pm »
Here's 2 copied lines from different post about the same bow,

"Bamboo backed Brazilian walnut or Ipe'

"Brazilian Cherry(aka ipe)"

I'm confused, so could somebody clarify, is ipe the same as brazilian walnut, or brazilian cherry??? I'm asking, because as I stated in another post, I have tried the walnut a few times, and all 3 bows failed. I have tried ipe with great success. Never brazilian cherry though. Just wondered?

Thanks!

Dave, I've always called it ipe. I don't know if it is also called Brazilian cherry or walnut. Ipe is quick and easy so that is what I call it.

Dave I think it is different, Brazilian walnut and epe, but I think a lot of times it is sold either way, kinda like if ya buy hickory it could be pecan

until they identify the species with latin full names we will never be really sure what we got.
I suspect ipe have become a tradename for the deckingtrade,i have seen so many different ipe boards its not even funny.
As long as they are rotresistent and hard its ok for decking,to make a good bow there are a few more boxes to check....

Ipe is Brazilian "Walnut". I thought the recent post calling it Brazilian Cherry was just a slip up. That would be Jatoba.
They are just called by these common names because they are superficially thought to resemble the  real thing.
There is an actual true Walnut that comes from South America and it really looks like Walnut. You are unlikely to find it as decking.
