Shelf life of scents and lures?
« on: October 29, 2013, 09:18:12 am »
I found a couple of bottles of doe urine and buck urine the other night that are about three years old. Does this stuff have a shelf life or is it still ok to use if I feel the need? Just wondering, don't want to keep it around if it's only seasonal.  Thanks for any comments, dp

Derik I never had a lick of luck using stink, I couldn't tell when it stops working man!

Well it definitely still stinks, but my nose does not pick up the micro smells of the scent. What I don't want is a deer smelling it and thinking, "huh, that smells like some old piss".

PD, I don't usually use scents, but I have had luck with the doe in heat bringing in both does and bucks during shotgun season.  I have put it on a rag w/ a rock in it and drug it behind me then hung the whole thing in a low limb close to my stand.  I have watched both sexes walk the same trail I had walked with their nose to the ground.  Shot two does that way three years ago.

Just wondering if it goes bad is all.  I may not use, but don't want to keep if it's no good.

Thanks Guys, dp

I've done like derik but had it on a foot drag at Pappy's and the first time I had a little four point come straight down the trail with his nose stuck to the ground. I didn't see him till it was too late to move.

Derik, some lures have a preservative in them but most urine's just seem to turn to the heavy ammonia smell, I have heard of guys just buying ammonia and seems to work and a lot cheaper, If it was me I would use it , don,t believe you would harm anything, Deer are real curious when it comes to smells, I have at least 5 traps a day sprung from ole curious deer, everything from coyote lures and urine's to sweet food call lures, or maybe it is the fresh dirt smell either way deer are curious critters. :o  Bob

I read somewhere quiet awhile ago about a study that was done where they found there was really know difference between deer or human urine, or pretty much any mammal urine. I think it was the University in Pittsburg.

I had read in a hunting magazine (not sure what one) about a guy that would pee on a deer scrap, with success. When they have that one thing on their minds, all rules can go out the window.  Ed
