A Few Recent Leather Projects

Just a few shots of some recent leather work.  Got a couple staves in exchange for making a sheath and armguard.  The recipient wanted to put the finishing touches on the armguard himself, so the buttons and lace are up to him.

I like how the armguard turned out, it's going to be hard letting it go.   >:D  It was made from veg-tanned leather, stingray skin for the inlay, and a suede liner.

The wallets and chains were just for fun.  I'm in the process of trying to come up with my own version of the "ultimate wallet", but have some changes to make yet.  I recently tried my hand at making some chainmaille wallet chains.  Turns out I have one of the largest chainmaille manufacturers/suppliers in North America just outside the city, so I don't have far to go for cheap supplies.

Now it's time to get bowyering with this new wood.  Going to try and complete my first successful self bow.  Tried a few in the past but they all ended up with some kind of "issues".  Shooting for a 62" stiff handle with flipped tips.  Already chased a ring and roughed it out.  Wish me luck :)

Paul, my leather is all hand-stitched.  Not because I'm a machine-snob or anything, I just don't have access to one and don't do enough sewing to justify buying one.  I used to dread it, but now that I have a better grasp on how to do it properly, it's not as tedious.  The outside stitching on that armguard probably took about 30 or 40 minutes.  A couple years ago it would have probably taken me 5 times as long.

I worked in shoe repair for a while and did my fair share of hand leather work and all I can say is WOW!

Is that stingray skin in the center of the armguard? They all look very nice. I hope my stitching turns out a quater as good as that!

Yes, it's stingray.  If you want some good pointers on hand stitching, check out some videos on youtube by Nigel Armitage.  He does really nice work and explains his process well.  The key is to do every stitch exactly the same, which sounds easy, but it's also easy to screw up if you are not paying attention :)

I hear ya on getting your stitching right.
Still watching and learning myself.

How did you get your sewing holes through the Stingray?
I've picked up a few hides, and have been experimenting with some scrap pieces.
But play havoc trying to get good (true) even holes through the stuff.
