Laminate bow

Well I did a little experiment.  ::)

It's a hickory backing with two sets of tapered maple lams and a 3/8" belly of red oak. I had the red oak as scrap and like I said, experiment. I wales clamps down and used electrical tape to keep tight. Glue lines looks good. We'll see once it's cleaned up. Ill post pics later.

Good luck on your experiment. Too bad you didn't have a strip of osage or ipe for the belly. I hope the red oak holds up for you.

Did u do a dry run of the glue up and shaping on the form before glue up? That's a lil harsh of a reflex bend and gonna be a booger....try to spread it out next time...

Lol well if it works the part that's reflexed up isn't going to bend. I'm gonna make it a mollie. They'll be about 10" levers. I'm sure it's gonna go boom. It was more of an experiment with my electrical tape method. My glue lines all look good though. I'm gonna make one for my step son. A little reflex deflex. It won't be as extreme

Well I got it all trimed up and pretty clean. Cut to length. I decided on a static handle because one lam has about a 1/16" gap between the 45 to the other lam. Seems to be ok to try and make something outta. I'll try and post picks once the handle is all glued up.

Harsh bends mid-limb on your reflex. I hope it holds. What kind of glue did you use?

Tightbond 3. It's gonna be a lever bow so the ends aren't working for the last 10" or so. Just and experiment

TB3 won't be very happy with a 1/16" gap, but I hope it works out for yah!

Yeah I know it likes a good tight fit. If it break it breaks. But at least I tried lol

That's the problem with that harsh of a bend...your lams wont wanna lay tight to each other past it,and it will also starve your glue joint right at the apex of the bend,and like Adam says you do not want a gap with tb3 OR a starved joint with it.....if it were me I wouldn't even try to tiller that if you do have 1/16" gaps and a highly suspected starved glue joint.....I would heat it up and take the lams apart,then clean them up and reglue....

The gap isn't between the lams it is between then splice. Right I'm the center. Everything else looks good. No gaps. So I figure if I stiffen the handle up it's be ok, am I wrong?
