I don't have ADH...OOOH! SHINEY! And now the stock is stained!
« on: September 03, 2013, 11:33:32 pm »

Continuing to slowly work on getting Perty Girl, my .36 cal flintlock refurbished.  Got the cracks in the stock done (professionally) and sanded down the old finish.  After some aggressive sanding, the brass furniture stands too proud from the wood and I needed to file them down to fit again.  After filing, out comes the 320 grit, then 400 grit, then 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper to get rid of tool marks.  Went out and bought a buffing wheel and tripoli polishing compound because I didn't have it in me to hand polish the last of it.

Now I go back to the stock with 320 grit for final sanding before laying on the stain.  Unsure what I am going to use for final finish.  I am a fan of TruOil, but I don't want the gloss.  I got time to think about it.

The shine will last as long as it takes to get some dirty patches out of the barrel.  I will wipe the brass down with those to tarnish it up nice and proper.

Thad be real perdy.. Just bought my first percussion cap.. Been fighting the urge for years >:D.. I'm a weak man.. After the 600 Ifin the brass parts are small enough put it in a brass tumbler with walnut gets all the little corners (check often)

Bring 'em on over, NO CHARGE! Everything is set up in the shop.  Shut off the lights when you are done!

I have over 8 hours of hand sanding those parts, plus 2 hours of filing to make 'em fit.

Takes a long time but it's worth it in the end.

The amount of time put into it is small compared to how long you use it...

Sanded out the stock to 320 grit, gave it a light spritz with water to bring up the "whiskers", repeated twice more.  Laid up Laurel Mountain Forge's Lancaster Maple stain on it today and I can smell the finish line.  I just need to pick up some TruOil for the final finishing.

I can't wait to shoot this gun again.  It's been too long since I held her close and touched her off.

Not a lot of curl in the buttstock, but under the forearm there is some great tiger stripe:

And here's the reason the whole thing had to be restored.  The cracks were repaired with glass bedding compound.  They show a little more than I hoped, but that's the breaks.

Yeah, that's the one coat.  I did use a sopping wet rag loaded with the stain, though.  I think I will hit it again tomorrow with another coat.  I do like a dark stain to maple.  When the finish goes on, it will probably show a lot more reddish tint.

I can smell the finish line and am getting antsy.

You keep this up JW, and I am going to have to follow my namesake of Hawkins, and build me one too....
