My scrap piece of osage - too much crack? Nah....
« on: September 03, 2013, 03:43:43 pm »
I have been seeing folks posting little "sliver bows" and reject pieces of osage that barely made a bow, so I whipped this one out the other day.  It was one of those pieces that didn't rough out well and ended up with deep gouges and cracks in the belly.  I chased a ring on a lark and made a bow out of this piece which was truly in the firewood pile.  It is 55" NTN, 7/8" wide in some places, bend thru the handle, 47lbs at 26".  It has been shot a couple of hundred times and shows very little set.  Osage is amazing.

Thanks Rich!    Yeah, PD I would have left this piece alone except for all the posts I have seen lately.  It inspired me to make one out of the most nothing piece of wood I could find.  It shoots great.

It really doesn't take much osage to make a hunting weight bow. I never throw any osage away. Eventually it will become a bow...even if its a kids bow.  ;)

That looks like a nice bow Howard, much better use of it than firewood.
