I've just finished TBB1 and have a question about splicing. In the book they show the splice oriented so the "Z" would be visible from the belly or the back. Up til reading TBB I would have put it 90 degrees to that, so the "Z" would be visible from the sides. Does it matter which way it goes? Is there a reason?

It would certainly make a difference in a D bow, not so much in a stiff handle bow.  Don't quite see why you would want to do it that way though.
